News LettersOctober 22, 2010 HeartlessMaarten Schaddelee When Maarten and Nadina Schaddelee attended the opening of the Bob Wright Centre in 2008 they were touched by the passion and dedication to our oceans that the speakers displayed. The Schaddelees decided to dedicate two sculptures that will serve as reminders of our need to be good stewards of the ocean. Maarten’s sculpture Delicate Balance and Heartless, created in 1988, represent the peril the whales face and our ability to affect that fate. Delicate BalanceMaarten Schaddelee Right after Heartless, Maarten sculpted Delicate Balance. The hand was carved first, and later a whale would drape over the hand. This was an emotion packed time as Maarten Schaddelee felt the whales’ plight was ours; what we do to them, we do to ourselves. Everything is connected and he started to take a closer look at his own beliefs and values.
